Communication learning for preschool and primary age children with hearing
loss.
A Cooperative Regional Program for Students with Hearing Loss
We are a public, cooperative deaf and hard of hearing program serving children from a variety of school districts in the Kitsap Area: Central Kitsap, North Kitsap, South Kitsap, Bremerton, North Mason, and Port Townsend. The program is housed in a centrally located elementary school which allows for mainstreaming of the children with their normal hearing peers.
We
currently serve deaf and hard of hearing children ages 3-8 at Woodlands
Elementary School. We have a morning preschool class and an afternoon mixed-age
primary class.
Our educational staff includes:
Teacher of the Deaf
Educational Audiologist
Para educators
Interpreter
The preschool classroom has normal hearing peer models attending with the children with hearing loss . Mainstreaming into the regular education classrooms is available for children from kindergarten age to sixth grade on site at the Woodlands Elementary School.
Some children receive additional services provided by building/district Speech-Language pathologists and/or an Occupational therapist as needed.
The focus of the program is to develop each child’s communication, speech and auditory skills to their potential, as well as develop early academic, social/emotional, and motor skills in a variety of learning experiences. We use SEE sign and speech simultaneously in our communication with children to provide consistent visual and auditory input.
